Autumn Quilty-ness

I was asked a few weeks ago to make a "special order" quilt and was more than happy to oblige.  The mom-to-be (in Australia) purchasing the quilt asked for fall colors and a retro-modern-traditional quilt, following the same basic pattern of one I have for sale on etsy.   Also, she doesn't know if she's having a boy or a girl so it had to be pretty neutral.

The hard part, for me, of making this quilt was figuring out what she was looking for in colors.  I'm not typically a fall color person (though I have just made another quilt with the same colors that I just realized I never took pictures of ... a situation I shall remedy tomorrow) so those colors don't come as easily to me as spring or summer colors - not that I love them less, I'm just naturally drawn to brighter colors with lots of white.

This was to coordinate with a banana yellow wall, a burnt orange sofa, a multi-colored ottoman, and a black wall decal.  The customer had pointed out some fabrics she liked so I purchased a charm pack of them and used those squares for a number of the centers.  I have a picture of the ottoman she is using and love the way it looks with the final quilt.

The quilting is done in the ditch with brown thread, and then each of the center squares it outlined with stitching.

The backside is solid brown and gold, with strips of the colors from the front.

  1. It looks great. I am sure she will love it. It is hard working outside your normal colours but also helps to broaden the imagination about the possibilities. Cherrie

  2. Jody, that looks beautiful! I love your bright palette of colors you use, this would have been a stretch for me too! I have that same fabric you used around the outside on the front- the little orange flowers. I was using a small piece of my one fat quarter of it this weekend wishing I knew the name of it or who designed it. My piece doesn't have any selvedge on it. Could you tell me the name/designer or the company who made it?
