Two months without a post but with very, very good reason.

River needed to perform community service for a Boy Scout merit badge he was earning. Given his age (12) and Covid restrictions finding a place to volunteer wasn't easy so he got creative and suggested fostering kittens for one of our local shelters.

In no time at all Quebec and Romeo were at our house, two less than four-week old kittens. While they are both black and about the same ago they were not litter-mates, we got Romeo first and Quebec a day later - they do so much better when they're not singletons and the two bonded immediately and were so good for each other.

We've fostered kittens before and decided long ago that to avoid keeping the kittens (you name them, you're likely keeping them) we'd use the military alphabet to temporarily name our kittens, in order backwards starting with Z. Xray, Yankee, and Zulu were our first fosters using this system; Yankee didn't make it but Xray and Zulu are now huge cats named Kit and Kat. Tango, Uniform, Victor, and Whiskey were next; Uniform stayed in the family and became Willie and the other three were adopted out of the shelter. Sierra was with us through Hurricane Irma; once the storm passed he (yes, Sierra was a he ... this isn't a perfect system) was adopted by Mia and is now a very fluffy cat named Linc. And then, most recently, Quebec and Romeo.

A day after getting our kittens Cassie decided she'd foster as well and she's now temporarily rearing Duck and Goose - who are absolutely adorable. Duck is slow to gain weight, having a metabolism I can only dream of, so she's had hers a little longer.

When Q and R first arrived they were syringe fed every 3 hours, moving to every 4 hours after a week or two.  They did not "relieve" themselves on their own and had to be stimulated with a cloth to go. They were given every hand towel in our house and we still had to do their laundry 3-4 times a day between pottying and bathing (because of pottying).

As they got older they got so much easier! By the time they left us, at about 8 weeks old, they were eating soft food and kibble, and using a litter box like the big cats that they were.

Romeo was always a little bigger than Quebec, but each of them more than tripled their weight while they were with us.

Big question ... how did we tell them apart? Quebec has a white stripe on his belly. But to be able to tell them apart without flipping one upside down Quebec wore lipstick on the back of his left ear ... without that we'd have been lost. As they got older it got easier - Romeo has bigger eyes and Quebec's eyes were more blue-green than Romeo's. Quebec was a bit smaller. One of them had a few white furs on his legs, the other on his ears. And their personalities were different. By the time they were about 5 weeks old I could tell them apart, River never mastered that.

We loved having them with us and can't wait to foster again after summer. Quebec was adopted by Mia and he and Linc are best of friends. Romeo went back to the shelter and was adopted within three days of being there.

I'm not really sure how many hours River put in in the six weeks we had the kittens. Definitely enough to meet his requirement.

A few last things:
* foster if you can ... the need is great
* if you see a kitten in the wild watch from a distance for a few hours, Mom is likely getting something to eat

A few works in progress to share!

First, two quilts that just need to be photographed. They are both super cute and, unintentionally, share a lot of similar colors.

This one is ready to be quilted on the long-arm quilter. I'm waiting for sewing machine oil to arrive before getting started on it, in the meantime it's loaded and waiting.

I started quilting it a few days ago and ran into some tension issues. Not a big deal, but then the bobbin got wonky and the machine stopped working completely - the motor ran but nothing else happened. In reading the manual I came across a blurb that said to look at what you were last doing to find the source of your problem - so I surmised this was a bobbin issue. The bobbin came out and got fixed, but still nothing. I played around with the bobbin housing for a bit and got some tweezers out and found a little stuck thread. Worked on that and still nothing. Hmm. Googled and googled and googled some more and finally found a video that dealt with the issue. Sure enough, there was a tiny piece, maybe 1/2" long, of thread stuck in the bobbin. My son Adam and I worked at it for about 2 seconds and that pesky thread came out and the machine worked again. Seriously, the tiniest little piece of thread!

I finished this top last night and, once I find a great background fabric, it'll be ready to be quilted too.

My mother has been supplying me with quilts to practice long-arm stitching on. These two are the next to be played with. She donates these quilts to a local hospital and they are perfect for learning new techniques on. After seeing Instagram videos of the amazing work long-arm quilters do I am excited to keep learning (and there's so much to learn and practice!).

Lastly, this sweet charm square pack is next in line to be made into a quilt. I know Christmas is a long way away and even Hobby Lobby doesn't have their Christmas stuff out yet, but I can't wait, this one is just way too cute.

What projects are you working on this month?

(camera phone picture ... for some reason my phone only takes great pictures at Target ... hmm ...)

Last week my kids joined their 4H group for a day long sewing session. We packed up three sewing machines, an iron and board, lunch and snacks, all the kids, and off we went.

The five children (yes, five, as the oldest, resistant-to-sewing, son quickly realized he wasn't the only teenaged boy there and the rest of them were sewing) completed seven pillowcases and a dress, and had a wonderful time. They really got the hang of sewing! One of the families had pre-cut and pressed the fabrics, so the kids could just grab a bundle of fabric and trim and go from there ... making it super easy to dive right in.

River sat on my lap and helped guide his chosen fabric for his pillowcase. He was as proud as any child in the room for his hard work.

The other kids discovered the "joy" of the seam ripper. Kaden was very unhappy about that until I pointed out that he was using my seam ripper, which I have because I need it and use it very often. Once he realized the other kids were using seam rippers too he lightened up and moved forward.

The dresses will head to children in Africa, the pillowcases to local victims of domestic abuse. I'm not sure how many items were completed but there were about 20 kids sewing that day, ranging in age from 3 to 17. What amazed me as much as the independence and talent of all the kids was the fact that they had no problem giving up a whole day (which was a day off from school for some of them) to give to those in need.

If you'd like to make your own pillowcases to fill a need please check out the 1 Million Pillowcase Challenge at APQ.

And, to wrap this post up with something completely irrelevant, here's River "on stage" playing guitar and singing They Might Be Giants songs:

A few notes:
  • fundraiser means lots of happy wonderful people to meet and chat with
  • rodeo is a seriously cool thing, these guys and gals are talented beyond belief and they work hard
  • when the live auction for $1000 worth of meat ends at $2400 you might tear up a little, knowing that's a huge and awesome contribution to the funds being raised
  • take better and more pictures (I sure didn't)
  • know how to get there ... what seems simple may not be and may leave you driving around in large circle for 45 minutes (in a very small town)
  • BBQ pork restaurants often don't serve food for non-meat eaters, plan accordingly (oops)
  • dirt floor = unique challenges and lots of dust to get rid of the next day

making friends

What else can I say, it was a lot of fun for a great cause. I sold some things but mostly just had a wonderful time.

I rarely saw my kids as they were off watching the rodeo all night. I, myself, saw very little of the rodeo because I was at the booth, but that only means we have to go to another rodeo very soon.

Prepping for an upcoming event, The Guardian Angels Service Dog Ranch Rodeo, being held in Labelle, FL this Saturday evening.

From the facebook event page:

"This event is to raise the funds to get Maggie Lou Hughes (9 years old) and Reagan Dollar (4 years old) each a Diabetec Alert Dog (DAD), these girls were recently diagnosed with TYPE 1 diabetes. DAD's are able to alert their owners of an impending blood sugar high or low, BEFORE IT CHANGES. These dogs are life changing additions to diabetics. It offers them a higher level of "control" on their bodies. Damage is caused to their organs when their blood sugar swings high and low, and it is cumulative over time. These very special dogs are able to minimize this long term damage and offer these girls a healthier future, and a safer today. The cost of these dogs is $20k (each) over two years. Our goal is to put a serious dent in those funds for these families.

The Ranch Rodeo will take place April 28th,7pm at the LaBelle Rodeo Grounds. Call Ins are April 23rd and 24th from 6-9pm at 863-517-1314. Events are 4D Barrels, Poles, Steer Undecorating, Team Tying, Team Roping, BULLS and Ranch Bronc Riding. This is NOT a team Ranch Rodeo, its single entry with All Around Cowboy & Cowgirl buckles. There will be slack Saturday morning.

THANK YOU TO ALL OF YOU!!!"

I've never been to a rodeo. My only idea of what a rodeo is like is what I've seen on tv, so I'm super excited for this one. The kids are too, especially the boys ... go figure.

I've been prepping in high gear, lots of bow ties, the fairy rings above in school colors, and after I get off the computer I'm going to start on some key fobs and business card holders.

If you're local please join us as we support this important cause for two young local residents. IF you attend the event mention that you're a blog or facebook fan of Because I'm Me and receive 25% off you entire order.

CNN: Brisbane Braces for More Flooding as 90 People Reported Missing

This is the quilt I'm auctioning for the benefit of the Australia Flood Victims.
  • Such a special quilt! Pretty ... fun ... funky ... unique.
  • The starting point fabric in this quilt is the black cotton with pink bird and flowers. The blocks are sewn log-cabin style, but are random as tends to be my preference. There are quite a few Anna Maria Horner fabrics mixed into this cheery quilt.
  • The binding is a reddish pink polka dot.
  • The backside is a red Ikea fabric with a row of blocks to tie in with the front.
  • The quilting is done with a loose wavy freemotion stitch.
  • The batting is a cotton and bamboo blend.
  • Measuring a generous 48" square this is the perfect size for a lap quilt, floor play mat, wall hanging, or toddler bed cover.

Auction has ended.  Thank you!
How this auction works:
1.  Bidding will start at $40 (Australian Dollars - right now that's about the same as US dollars - $100 USD = $101.48 AUD).
2.  You can place a bid by leaving a comment on this blog post with your bid amount and email address.  Please make sure that your bid is higher than the previous bidder.
3.  Your bid must be in whole dollar increments.
4.  This auction is open to everyone, however $20 will be charged for International addresses.  Postage is FREE for United States residents.
5.  The auction begins NOW and will END at midnight on Monday January 24, 2011.
6.  At the close of the auction, I will contact the winner (please make sure your bid comment includes your email address).  The winner will pay the winning amount directly into the Premier's Flood Relief Appeal with either a Visa, MC, or American Express and send me proof of payment via email. I ran a "mock transaction" as far as entering credit card information and it made no difference that I was in the United States, but if you have any problems submitting payment let me know.  Once proof of payment has been received, I will send your lovely quilt to you.
7.  Thank you for participating and happy bidding!

Updated 1/19/2011 : I have removed the shipping fee.  I will cover shipping to anywhere.

If you can't bid or contribute financially, as many can't, or even if you can and do, please link to this post via your blog, facebook, twitter, whatever and also get the word out about the QLD Flood Relief Appeals Auctions.  Thanks so much and good luck!

This list is awesomely long!  Head over to Make It Perfect to see the list.  ( Here's the link again, since "list" is such a short word, and the list is so long!)

And here's the link to my auction again.  Bidding is rising wonderfully and I'm so happy to be a part of this awesome event. This contribution feels so insignificant in light of the flooding in Brazil and the general need everywhere ... it's a small thing, but enough small things equal big things, right?

This just cracks me up, trying so hard to figure out that shadow of his ...

But really, the most important part of this post is, again, this ...

Bidding is up to $80 and rising quickly. Thank you everyone for your support.

(please spread the news about this fundraiser, you can just click the "share" button at the bottom of my original post, or share a link from Make It Perfect.)

I have committed to donating $3 of grocery purchases to a local food bank each week.

Here's what I'll be giving this week:

16 boxes of Mueller's pasta
2 boxes of Betty Crocker Scalloped Potatoes
3 cans Campbell's cream soup
2 cans RoTel diced tomatoes

I really thought the 16 boxes of pasta were going to add up to $3, but they were a Publix "buy one, get one" at $1.17 each, then topped with $.55 coupons (used two, one for each box of pasta), bringing the total for two boxes to $.07 ... bringing the total for 16 boxes to $.56 ... as the kids said: Epic Fail

The scalloped potatoes were also a Publix "buy one, get one" at $1.75 each, topped with $.50/2 coupon ... brought the cost of 2 to $1.25.

The campell's soup was on sale last week at Target for $.50, with coupons I paid $.30 per can, or $.60 for 2 cans.

The RoTel tomatoes were also a Publix "buy one, get one" at $1.39, used a $1.00 coupon (I think it was $1/3, so I bought six for $4.20 and used 2 $1 coupons, bringing cost for each can to $.37 each.

Total spent:  $3.15

If that alone doesn't speak to the value of coupons and sale shopping, the total I spent at Publix yesterday was $53.94 ... and I saved $118.57.  My cart was overflowing.

"There were plenty of coupons I wasn’t using, so I decided to spend $3 each week buying a few things for my local food bank. I still remember that feeling of thankfulness that I wasn’t a single mom struggling to provide for my child. I can’t imagine how helpless a mom in that situation feels. So here’s how I can help, even on my limited budget! For $3, matching coupons and sales, I can get $18-25 worth of groceries for families in need.

As the economy dipped, friends started looking to me for news on free activities and great grocery sales. Emailing each new find to people started to get pretty time consuming. So in June I started a blog…a one-stop spot for all my friends to learn of my finds. I included my $3 grocery deals for the food bank. The word spread, and the positive response from so many people has been overwhelming. My conservative estimate is that since June we’ve collectively donated over $100,000 worth of groceries to food banks!! Giving feels so good!"

As I read this blog post I started thinking about the first paragraph above.  The kids and I live on an insanely tight budget (my goal is to spend no more than a very minimal budgeted amount on anything I buy but gas, which is budgeted separately) but we are making it.

Some families aren't. And I am thankful every day that I'm not one of the Moms who can't put a meal on the table at night  We live in one of the areas hardest hit by the housing collapse.  Building came to, virtually, a dead stop.  So many people lost jobs and even their homes.  We have one of the highest foreclosure rates in the country and it's going to be quite some time before this area recovers.

So $3.  Just $3 a week.  That's a small percentage of my spending budget.  I can do that and I know what I can get for $3, so it'd be worth it (and might be a really fun challenge too).

I will be posting my $3 "to donate" purchases every week (hopefully I'll remember!).
