A Collaboration of Sorts

My mother, in an effort to use up some fabric, made a pretty, simple patchwork quilt top. And then she didn't know what to do with it, and wasn't feeling "wowed" by it. So she passed it, and a disappearing nine patch in similar fabrics that just needs to be quilted, along to me. The colors ... are not exactly ones I'd choose, but they are so her ... I can't help but smile when I look at it. Much more grown-up and "fallish" than the bright summery colors I'm drawn to.

It was kind of cool, though, to have this top to do whatever I wanted with. It felt like a freebie ... screwing it up would be ok since I had nothing invested in it. I finally decided it'd be fun to cut up and put it back together, you know, like the denim jeans challenge on Project Runway.

After a few weeks of mulling it over, and a few polite inquiries from my mother as to the status of the project, here are the two lap quilt tops I've made from her patchwork quilt top. All I did was cut them up, add the white sashing, and put them back together. The two aren't the same size, but measure about 40" by 50" or so. The two differ slightly, one has a thin border of colored pieces, the other is bordered with white, and the one has a row of narrower blocks going down the center.

I am not sure of the backing yet, but am leaning towards blue. I have some of the top fabric left over so will add that into the back somehow. The binding ... I'd like to use something orangy for one and for the other ... ? ... what would you use? I may add a few appliques to one, probably fall leaves but I'm wondering if something else might be better ... I'm open to suggestions.

So there you go Mom ... I really am working on the project!

I'm such a lucky girl. Kathryn, the winner of my tote bag drawing, sent me all this as a thank you! Coupons, a notebook, fabric, a paper cutter, a can of tomato paste (which was what her tip was about) and more, more, more. I was so happy when I opened the package. Thank you Kathryn for such an unexpected treat.
