Oh yeah, that #$)@&* quilt

butterfly quilt finished

It's finished. I'm pleased to say I've lived to tell about it. In the end, I think it's ok, not exciting or anywhere near as special as I'd hoped, but ok. And finished ... and sometimes that's the very best thing in the world.

butterfly quilt

butterfly quilt with back and bindingI mentioned already here and here the problems with the butterfly. As you can see in the photo, it's right on the edge. I ended up shortening the quilt so it'd at be at the edge at both the side and bottom. It helped, certainly.

I spray basted this one, as I did for the last quilt. It worked well enough last time but not so much for this one. I used a polyester blend batting and waited a few days to do the quilting because I ran out of thread. During those few days the spray lost its stickiness. It actually worked out alright because I was only sewing straight lines, but had I been doing something more intricate it'd have been a disaster. butterfly quiltLesson learned: use spray basting with cotton batting, or quilt immediately.

Before A. and K. climbed the tree we drove around looking for somewhere to take a picture of the quilt, knowing it'd be dark before we got home. And then we found these huge beds of pretty pink flowers. How perfect is that? Except that they were in the median in the middle of the street! We looked so silly but we had a good laugh (no worries, we were on a little sidewalk that bisected the median).

I'm not sure what will become of this quilt. Stay tuned ... it may be given away here soon.

  3. Oh my stars and garters, if you give it away I will be ALL OVER IT.

I understand your frustration over it but the colors are still so beautiful, and I do think what you did with the butterfly helped tremendously!
