This morning A. met with a children's neurologist to discuss his developmental delays.

The first thing I had to do was fill out a questionaire about his development. The questionaire covered up to 5 years old, so I'm not sure how helpful it was, but he excelled at everything except knowing his address and telephone number and knowing colors.

The doctor then spoke to me, for his history, and Adam. Adam was doing great ... copied the shapes she asked him to, answered opposites questions, and stated his full name. He was moving along quite nicely until she asked him what he had for dinner last night. He had no idea whatsoever. Then she asked him to read a short paragraph, perhaps two sentences. He couldn't figure out the first word ... not even the first letter. She then asked him math questions verbally and he got them all right.

Yes, she agreed, he's delayed. Processing problems. Her suggestions were to have him evaluated fully by a psychologist, change his reading program, and try a few computer learning games that teach phonics. After the psychological evaluation we'll have a better idea of where the input/output problems are coming from and what to do next - her thought was probably special ed. in an environment that will fit his learning style best.

All in all, it was a good, positive appointment. It does suck though to hear, from someone else, that your child has problems. But, as I told Jason, it's better to hear that he needs help than to be told that he's fine, when we know he isn't!
