Review and Giveaway: Purex Power Shot Laundry Detergent (giveaway ended)

So simple a pre-teen boy can do it.

That pretty well sums up my experience with this new detergent, Purex PowerShot Liquid.. Well, that and it's super easy to use with a perfect measure every time and no spilling, it has a nice, not girly, "Mountain Breeze" scent that lasts, and it gets clothes clean.

Be sure to enter the giveaway at the bottom of this post after reading the review. (ended)

The key to this brand new, hitting the market in February, Purex detergent is the PowerShot feature.

Flip the bottle upside down,

right it and see the detergent in the holder at the top,

open the cap,

and pour into the washer.

The detergent stop pouring after one full dose, even if you don't right the bottle immediately. Once you've used it once the dose container will refill automatically and will be ready to go next use.

Fool proof laundry dispensing with easy,  no-guesswork measuring and no spills.

If your load is large or extra dirty give it two flips.

For spot and stain removal you can open the cap and slowly pour the detergent directly onto stains.

I've been asked at what age my kids start doing laundry. To answer: all my kids are very capable of sorting laundry, and all but River load the washer and run the dryer (because River can't reach the knobs). They start running the dryer at about age 8 and the washer around age 10.

River and I are the folders. River is the towel folder, he began with small dish clothes a few years ago, when he was 3 or so, and has worked his way up to bath towels, with some shorts, socks, and tees thrown in on occasion.

Ironing is also a task they all learn as they get a little older. The teenagers do all their own ironing, especially the ones with retail jobs. Most of them started by ironing neckties and bow ties and worked up to shirts and pants as their need arose.

So ... now you know.

Bridesmaid and Ring Bearer

I've been working on an upcoming photo shoot with my youngest and his best bud as "mock" ringbearers. The bridesmaid will be wearing a gorgeous cream colored floral dress and the boys will be wearing either vests or suspenders in cream and a coordinating bow tie along with tan pants. Accenting the outfit will be a sweet little boutineer.

Here's the preliminary idea, which will be edited slightly:

I had way too much fun creating this mock-up and I can't wait to share the final photos with you!

Review and Giveaway: The Identical

The other night the kids and I enjoyed a fun family movie night with a good, clean family movie, The Identical.

First a bit of trivia: Elvis was a twin. His brother, Jesse Garon Presley, was stillborn.

The Identical begins with a bit of a "what if" scenerio ... suppose Elvis' brother Jesse hadn't been stillborn but the family, very poor, couldn't afford at that time to raise two children.Would Jesse be a musician too? How would Elvis' life be different in a different family?

In The Identical twins Ryan and Drexel, born into a poor, but loving, family are unknowingly separated at birth. Drexel stays with his birthparents while Ryan is raised by a charismatic, intense minister and his wife who are unable to have children of their own. Drexel grows up to be a big rock star while Ryan spends much of his life conflicted by his love for rock and roll and his duty to his family and church, leaving him uncertain of what direction to go with his life. As Ryan becomes an adult he can't ignore the calling of the music and sets out on a rock and roll career, as a cover artist for Drexel. Eventually Ryan discovers the truth about his birth and he and his family face the unavoidable emotions that come with learning such monumental news.

This movie, which was released in theaters September 5, 2014, has some big names to it's credit - Ray Liotta, Ashley Judd, Seth Green, and Blake Rayne.

Adam, Kaden, and River liked the movie. It's the story of a young man who likes cars and music ... they were pretty well hooked from the beginning. It is a good, clean family movie. There's smoking in the movie and a little bit of alcohol but nothing that I wasn't comfortable with them seeing.

The Identical will be available on DVD and Blue-Ray on January 13, 2015 but I have a copy for you to win right now! Included with the 107 minute long movie are over 85 minutes of bonus content including "Making the Identical", Behind the Scenes, and Deleted Scenes.

Enter below for your chance to win and good luck! If you don't win Family Christian if offering the movie DVD for $5 off until the end of January. If you have won the same prize on another blog, you are not eligible to win it again. Winner is subject to eligibility verification.

2015 Word of the Year

I couldn't escape the "word of the year" trend this year. My word this year is "achieve" which seems really unfun and blah compared to words like "love" and "family". But, to me, it's important and by putting it out there and explaining it I know I'll hold myself more accountable to it.

Achieve means ... accomplishing my three biggest, albeit boringest, goals for the upcoming year.
  • Grow Because I'm Me to a much more serious business with a brand new website, independent shop, and IRL sales (booths at shows and space in brick-and-mortar shops). I've been blessed to be able to keep Because I'm Me at a size that was comfy-small but in the next few years my financial needs are going to change drastically and I need to prepare for that. The changes are exciting - lots of learning and growing going on behind-the-scenes right now - but also a little scary - a bit of wondering if I can make this happen. But the word is achieve and I am committed to doing everything I can.
  • Lose weight and exercise regularly ... a very realistic goal has been set and I've given myself a year to reach it. This is an area I've really struggled with. I know part of it is time and energy, but it's more just an acceptance that I'll fail because I've failed before. This year, however, I will achieve that goal; this is my year to do so.
  • Get the family finances back in order, this winter I've had a few major expenses that have done some serious damage to my second car / paint the house / emergency fund and it's time to regroup and get it all back in order. Plus, I have another bill that must be paid and lately we've been running into months with more month than money. This one I have every confidence we'll achieve with some serious self and family discipline.

So there you go, the goal is to reach the goals I've set for myself, to achieve success with each of the three of them. Not exciting goals this year, but I see such exciting possibilities when they're reached!

Last year I didn't do the word thing, but did share some goals ... lose weight (failed, badly, which won't be happening again this year), taking more time for myself (I don't think so, though we did do some awesome stuff as a family), and going on at least one date (succeeded, more than one actually).

Most of the kids are with their father right now so we'll celebrate New Year's when they get home. We'll open the envelope we sealed last January with our goals for 2014. I can't wait to see how we did on them --- but I'm going to go ahead and admit that putting them in a sealed envelope might not have been the greatest idea, no one is altogether sure what their goals were.

I'm going to conclude this post the same as I did my New Year's post last year. Some things don't change ...

Thanks for sticking with me this year. Thank you for helping my business grow, this business, while fun and rewarding for me, also provides much needed income for my family and has helped us to stay afloat this year, making it even more near and dear to my heart. Thanks for reading, sharing, and commenting on the wide variety of posts on this blog - from home schooling to business to family to travel to who knows what, I know sometimes it's a little all over the place, but isn't life like that?

My wish for you in 2015 is simple: On the last day of 2015 I hope you will be able to look back and know you had the best year possible. That, most certainly, is my biggest goal this year and every year.
